Old Lyme girls, Stonington boys win state tennis championships; Stonington girls lose in final
Middletown — Old Lyme won its third consecutive Class S girls’ tennis championship on Thursday morning at Wesleyan University, moments before Stonington captured its first Class S boys’ state title.
The top-seeded Wildcats completed their third consecutive perfect season with a 7-0 victory over No. 2 Westbrook and the third-seeded Bears rolled to a 6-1 win over No. 4 Nonnewaug.
Old Lyme finished the season 23-0 and will carry a 66 match winning streak into the 2024 season. Stonington finished 19-1, its only blemish a 5-2 loss to Class M semifinalist Hand.
In the Class M girls’ final, No. 2 and defending champion Stonington came up short in its title rematch with No. 9 Hand. Hand has clinched the match, leading 4-2 with one doubles match still in progress.
