    Local roundup: Sea Unicorns beat Worcester 4-2 and inch closer to first place in FCBL

    Norwich — The Norwich Sea Unicorns moved to within a half-game of first-place Worcester by defeating the Bravehearts 4-2 in a Futures Collegiate Baseball League game on Tuesday night at Dodd Stadium.

    The Sea Unicorns (31-16) won their seventh straight game. Worcester, which scored a pair of runs in the ninth, is 32-14.

    Christo Garrelts (Elon) pitched five shutout innings for his second win. He allowed only only three hits and has not allowed an earned run in 24 innings this season.

    Norwich took a quick 3-0 lead in the second, scoring all three runs with two outs on a two-run single by Joey DeMucci (Monmouth) and an RBI single by Johnny Knox (Nichols).

    The Sea Unicorns added a fourth run in the fifth when Ray Leonzi (Eastern Connecticut) led off with a single and eventually scored on a wild pitch.

    DeMucci and Dean Ferrara (Fairfield) had two hits apiece for Norwich with Ferrara raising his average to .442.

    NECBL

    • The Mystic Schooners rallied from a 6-1 deficit to defeat the Danbury Westerners 9-8 in the New England Collegiate Baseball League. The Schooners (21-12) eventually tied the game at 7-7 in the eighth on an RBI single by Sam Kilpatrick (Belmont) and took a 9-7 lead on back-to-back bases-loaded walks.

    Jay Allmer worked around a pair of base his in the ninth to earn his ninth save while Evin Sullivan (Binghamton) had two hits, three RBI and two runs scoredc, Jack Goodman (Pepperdine) was 2-for-5 with a solo home run and Anthony DePino (Rhode Island) had a hit and two RBI. Danbury is 17-18.

    • DePino was one of 13 players to be selected to participate in the NECBL Home Run Derby on Sunday at Fraser Field in Lynn, Mass., home of the North Shore Navigators. The derby begins at 2 p.m. with the NECBL All-Star Game to follow at 4:30 p.m. DePino has a team-high four home runs and also leads the Schooners in RBI (17) and runs scored (17).

    New England Babe Ruth (14)

    • Connecticut state champion Waterford opens play in the New England Babe Ruth (14) baseball tournament on Wednesday against Cranston (R.I.) at 10 a.m. Waterford will also play Pittsfield (Mass.) in pool play on Thursday at 10 a.m., and Tri-County (Maine) on Friday at 1 p.m. The tournament is being played at North Providence (R.I.) High School.
