    The Buzz: Waterford author, illustrator, releases ‘Slater Mountain: Horses & Dreams Creative Coloring’

    Judy Ricketts-White, author and publisher, has released “Slater Mountain: Horses & Dreams Creative Coloring,” a companion to the Moonbeam Children’s Award-winning “Slater Mountain” book series, (Mecate Press, $13.95, paperback).

    In “Horses & Dreams Creative Coloring,” pre-teens and teens can express their creative talents as they get to know Bailey Mathews, her horses, family and friends. The author uses the horse skills learned working with her own horses in her everyday life, weaving these elements into her storytelling and illustrations.

    The Day is sponsoring a free Regional Job Fair from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 7, at the Hilton Mystic, 20 Coogan Blvd., Mystic.

    The job fair allows prospective employees to connect with employers from around the region and beyond. Job seekers will find a wide range of employment opportunities, in healthcare, banking, food services, education, sales and many others.

    The Connecticut Storytelling Center is looking for a diverse corp of storytellers for literacy enhancement programming in schools across the state. Paid storytellers serve students in preschool through fifth grade with programming that can last from one day to a residency that covers multiple weeks. The center is training new teaching artists to meet the needs of the schools they are serving.

    The Rev. Monsignor Kevin Randall, a New London native, has been appointed as the Apostolic Nuncio (Papal Ambassador) to Bangladesh by Pope Francis. The appointment was made public by the Vatican on Sunday, Aug. 13.

    Randall was ordained a priest on July 25, 1992, and is incardinated in the Diocese of Norwich. This appointment elevates him to the dignity of Archbishop with the titular see of Glenndálocha.

    With a background in canon law, he joined the diplomatic service of the Holy See in 2001. He has served in various apostolic nunciatures, including Rwanda, Serbia, Slovenia, Peru, South Africa, Mexico, and Austria. His fluency in French, Italian, Spanish, and German has facilitated meaningful connections in his diplomatic roles.

    Joan O. Vorster, of Stonington, has been named the Best Lawyers 2024 Medical Malpractice Law - Defendants “Lawyer of the Year” in Worcester, Mass.

    "Lawyer of the Year" honors are awarded annually to only one lawyer per practice area in each region. She has been recognized by Best Lawyers since 2020. Vorster is a partner in Mirick O'Connell's Litigation Group.

    New London-based attorney Jennifer Mullen was selected for inclusion in The Best Lawyers in America 2024. Best Lawyers lists are compiled based on peer-review evaluation. Mullen works in insurance litigation and medical malpractice law.

    The Eugene O’Neill Theater Center has announced it will be hosting the Brittany Fisher play “Your Regularly Scheduled Programming” in September. The script was originally selected for the 2022 National Playwrights Conference, and the O’Neill invited Fisher back to enjoy a week on the O’Neill campus with a full cast and creative team led by director Melissa Mowry.

    Fisher’s residency will also include two public readings, Sept. 13 and 15 in the O’Neill’s Dina Merrill Theater. Tickets at $33 are available at https://theoneill.my.salesforce-sites.com/ticket/#/.

    Southeastern Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence will be hosting a dedication ceremony at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 16, at its Lebanon Pines treatment program. New names will be unveiled for several buildings and a cherished location to be dedicated to a previous client whose memory lives on after a tragic loss.

    860Kombucha has announced it will be an official vendor at the Groton Brew Run on Sept. 9. The company will be on hand to provide kombucha beverages to participants and spectators.

    The Groton Rotary Club has announced its slate of new officers for the 2023-24 Rotary Year. Jan Ellis will be the club’s president, Robert Boris will fill the vice president position, Cindy Olsen will serve as secretary and Deborah Lea Doran will be treasurer.

    Two Rotarians received the Scarano Award, which recognizes yearly contributions of service above self. The awardees are Gary Weale and Jan Ellis. The club’s Board of Directors are: Jan Ellis, Cindy Olsen, Deborah Lea Doran, Gary Weale, John Silsby, Richard B. Kent, Jr., Lian Obrey, and Robert Boris.

    The club’s Community Service Awards Foundation Board members are: Frank E. Winkler, chair; Jan Ellis, Cindy Olsen, Deborah Lea Doran, Robert Boris, David Brown, Nancy Turner and Greg Thevenet.

    Silsby will continue as the club’s Interact Advisor and Youth Services Chair. Kent will serve as the Club’s Rotary foundation chair and executive secretary. Winkler is chair of the club’s Foundation Board.

    Chamber news

    The Greater Mystic Chamber of Commerce will hold a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for Outer Light’s new mural, “Greetings from Groton” and release of a new IPA to commemorate the occasion Sept. 15 at 266 Bridge St., Groton. A local food truck will be on-site selling dinner items. All ages welcome. Outer Light's doors open at 2 p.m., ribbon cutting at 5:30 p.m., beer will release when Outer Light opens its doors.
