A family of artists is displaying their individual works at Waterford Public Library this month.

“Aim for the top and don’t rest until you’ve arrived” is the mantra of Cristina Ruales, a fashion designer from Waterford who comes to the field with a unique point of view in design, promoting confidence as a proud Latina born in Quito, Ecuador, and single mother of twins.

So when her children, Sierra and Kai, started expressing an interest in art, she naturally encouraged them, and now they are integral to Cristina Ruales’ DÉCOR collection and Interior Design Services that will be launching this winter. The collection will include custom wallpaper, linens, pillows, duvet covers and greeting cards.

The designs will incorporate original art she and her sister create along with work by her 12-year-old twins, who currently attend The Williams School. Their mother is a fashion designer and creative director in New York City who had her own eponymous collections when she lived there full time.

Ruales attended the Parsons School of Design at 16, earning a fine arts degree in fashion design, then went on to Yale University, where she received a Master of Fine Arts degree with a focus on design and the history of fashion.

In 2000, she launched her first Cristina Ruales line in Barney’s New York and Japan, followed by Nieman Marcus. By 2014, the Cristina Ruales collection debuted in the official fashion calendar of New York Fashion Week, placed between two other iconic Latino designers , Oscar de la Renta and Narciso Rodriguez.

She said her new move into home decor is inspired by nature and the Connecticut seaside.

Her son, Kai H. Ruales, has been drawing since he would hold a pencil in his hand. He loves drawing and dreams of being a Lego designer. He loves soccer, sailing, ice hockey, singing and playing guitar.

Daughter Sierra H. Ruales loves to watercolor and has an affinity for color and painting. Sierra adores animals and loves to ride horses. She also plays soccer, loves sailing, ice hockey, singing, dancing and plays the drums. She dreams of becoming a fashion designer like her mom.
