One dead after crash in Niantic

East Lyme ― A local man was pronounced dead following a late-morning crash Thursday on Main Street.

East Lyme Police Chief Mike Finkelstein identified the man as Brian Brousseau, 65, of Niantic.

The road was closed for about three hours from Smith Avenue to the Waterford side of the Niantic River Bridge while the Shoreline Accident Reconstruction Team investigated the 11:04 a.m. crash involving two cars.

Finkelstein said Brousseau was traveling westbound on Main Street in the area of Cini Memorial Park and Marker 7 Marina when he crossed over the center line, striking a vehicle traveling eastbound. The crash resulted in very minor damage to both cars.

Brousseau was taken unresponsive to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital and pronounced dead, according to Finkelstein. The driver of the second vehicle was not injured.

The road reopened around 2 p.m. Investigators from the reconstruction team, a joint venture between East Lyme and Waterford, is working to determine if the cause of the driver’s condition was medical or accident related.

Finkelstein said the determination ultimately will be up to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
