Another union vote at Foxwoods set for April 20

Mashantucket — Nearly 300 employees responsible for cleaning and maintaining Foxwoods Resort Casino will decide this month whether they want to be represented by the Boston-based New England Joint Board of the Unite Here labor union.

A union election, to be conducted by the Mashantucket Employment Rights Office, has been set for Friday, April 20, the union announced Wednesday.

Foxwoods is owned by the Mashantucket Pequot Tribe.

The employees eligible to vote for union affiliation are members of the casino’s Environmental Services Department. In a news release, the union said they “are one step closer to having a voice in their workplace to speak up for fair wages and working conditions.”

ESD workers, many of whom are immigrants, have cited the threat of outsourcing as a prime motivating factor in their drive for union representation, according to Unite Here.

Foxwoods’ slot-machine technicians voted 21-7 last month to join Local 30 of the International Union of Operating Engineers, which has represented the casino’s Engineering Department employees since 2011. Forty-five slot technicians were eligible to vote.
