Westerly — Suzanne Lane recalled that when a new customer came in to her new location of Gray Goose Cookery, she referred to its spot at Watch Hill Road and Setting Sun Drive as "Goose Corner."

It's a fitting epithet for a place that's across from an eatery called The Cooked Goose and next to The Gosling Waterfront Market & Gallery.

In late April, Lane announced that after more than 30 years in business, she and her husband would be retiring and closing the Gray Goose Cookery in Olde Mistick Village, as they could not find a buyer.

Around that time, "We sort of had remorse about this being final," she said recently. "It's like, we're not quite ready." But she said Gray Goose Cookery couldn't stay in the village because of a rent increase.

After not finding a suitable alternative in Groton or Mystic, the couple decided to take a gander at Watch Hill.

They saw that the former yoga studio at 93 Watch Hill Road was empty and inquired about the space with real estate sales associate Rhona Heyl. Heyl had dreamed of opening a shop, and so she leased the space next door for The Gosling.

The Gray Goose Cookery closed at its Olde Mistick Village location in early May, applied for its business license with the Town of Westerly on May 16 and opened on June 22. The Gosling opened last week.

The new Gray Goose Cookery is about 2,000 square feet, half the size of the Olde Mistick Village space. There's no kitchen in the Westerly space, but Lane said she's doing private classes at Coogan Farm and is available to do classes in Connecticut and Rhode Island.

The Gosling, which Heyl jokes she opened because of a "temporary leave of my sense," features art from local photographers like Dave Pruitt and Ann Henne, and local food items from companies like Hauser Chocolatier and Stonington Cheese.

The store also sells consignment items people bring in, and Heyl plans to sell locally produced honey, jam and syrup. She will be offering cheese tastings every Friday evening.

Gray Goose Cookery is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday to Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. The summer hours at The Gosling are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. seven days a week.

The gaggle of visitors to Olde Mistick Village still will have a kitchen store option: Stefan Ambrosch is opening Kitch at the former site of Gray Goose Cookery at the end of this month.

In recent weeks, he has posted brands the store will carry, including Oxo, Cuisinart, Wüsthof, Swiss Diamond and Vitamix.
