Shawn Palmer returning to The Day as chief revenue officer
New London — Shawn Palmer, a veteran Connecticut newspaper executive and former advertising director of The Day, has been named The Day’s chief revenue officer.
Palmer’s hiring, effective May 13, was announced Thursday by Timothy Dwyer, The Day’s president and publisher.
Palmer is senior vice president, chief revenue officer and general manager of RJ Media Group in Meriden, which he joined in 2013. Before that, he was publisher of The News-Times of Danbury. He was The Day’s advertising director from 2004 to 2008, a period in which he launched a digital division and managed its growth in revenue from $175,000 to $1.8 million.
Calling The Day "a special place," Palmer said he first discussed returning when he called Dwyer in March to congratulate him on being named president and publisher.
“He has a wealth of experience in sales management, operations, change management and digital transformation,” Dwyer said of Palmer. “Shawn will be responsible for driving all Day revenue and will be instrumental in developing strategy for our long-term success as a locally owned independent media company.”
Palmer, 51, who lives in Colchester, serves as president of the Connecticut Daily Newspaper Association, a Hartford-based sales and government-affairs organization that represents all 17 daily newspapers in the state.
RJ Media Group, a family-owned media company, consists of the Record-Journal of Meriden, six free weekly newspapers and The Cheshire Herald, a paid weekly it acquired this year. The company also owns Homebase Digital, a digital marketing agency serving central Connecticut.
RJ Media Group owned The Westerly Sun for some 20 years before selling it in 2018.
The Record-Journal has a print circulation of about 15,000 seven days a week, Palmer said. The Day's print circulation is 23,500 on Sundays and 22,471 Monday through Saturday.
