Casinos report declines in August slot revenues
Foxwoods Resort Casino and Mohegan Sun reported year-over-year declines in their August slot-machine revenues Tuesday, with Foxwoods keeping $29.6 million, about 25% less than it kept the same month a year ago.
Mohegan Sun kept $49.6 million for a much less steep decline of 8.7%.
Foxwoods sent $7.4 million of its August slots “win” to the state, while Mohegan Sun contributed $11.4 million.
The casinos still are not operating at full capacity since reopening June 1 after coronavirus-induced shutdowns. In August, the Northeast’s competitive landscape continued to favor Mohegan Sun, which derived more benefit than Foxwoods did from the continued closures of commercial casinos in New York state.
Casinos in New York City and the Catskills region partially reopened last week and one in Yonkers is set to do so Monday.
Previously, Mohegan Sun had reported a slight year-over-year increase in slots revenue for July while Foxwoods’ win in that month was down nearly 20%. Both casinos reported modest declines of less than 5% for June.
In Massachusetts, gaming regulators announced Tuesday that MGM Springfield kept $14 million in slots revenue last month, down about 10%, while its table-games revenue was down 17%. Its total gaming revenue was $18.5 million.
Encore Boston Harbor reported a year-over-year increase in slots revenue but a significant decline in table-games revenue. Its total gaming revenue of $42.4 million was down from $52.5 million the previous August.
