    Spinning Wheel Dye Garden show Sept. 9

    From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 9, the North Stonington Historical Society Homestead is celebrating Dye House Day and its new Spinning Wheel Dye Garden at 1 Wyassup Road. Admission is free, and there will be on-site parking.

    Dye House Day features indigo demonstrations, crafts and camaraderie. Activities highlight dyeing, weaving, spinning tools and samples of the plaids that made it famous. Tour the gardens and the historic village. North Stonington Village became known as Milltown for the many mills in the town and for its ability to create multiple shades of blue fiber from indigo.

    Lyme Public Library events in September

    Highlights from Lyme Public Library’s events in September include Rudy Stark of Connecticut Green Bank giving a talk on “Going Green 101 for Homeowners: Projects with impact and the Financial Considerations” at 6 p.m. Sept. 5.

    Also, the Friends of the Lyme Public Library Annual Book Sale will be held 3 to 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 8, with books at full price and and 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Sept. 9, with books at half price. From 12:30 to 4 p.m. Saturday, books will be sold at $5 per bag.

    At 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 14, hear historian John Pfeiffer give a lecture on “The History of the Nehantic Nation: Past, Present and Future.”

    At 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 21, hear journalist Tom Verde give a talk on the “History of the Great New England Hurricane of 1938,” and at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 30, attend a Poetry as Memoir Workshop with poet and journalist Bessy Reyna.

    Eastern Connecticut Ballet ‘Spooktacular’

    The eighth annual “Ballet Spooktacular,” by the Eastern Connecticut Ballet, will present six performances Oct. 28-29 at the Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center in Old Saybrook. The celebration kicks off with a sensory friendly performance at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 28, for families with children who benefit from sensory accommodations.

    The “Spooktacular” showcases several short ballet works that capture the spirit of Halloween.

    Writers’ Showcase Aug. 28

    At 4:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 28, at the New London Public Library, the Town of Groton Parks & Rec creative writing programs will present a showcase of its adult novelette and short story writing students. Featured will be published writers presenting portions of their works. Some will have books to sell. Free admission, but donations for the library will be accepted.

    Mental illness support groups

    The National Alliance on Mental Illness of Southeast Connecticut offers family support groups for family, partners, friends and significant others of adults living with mental illness.

    In-person family support groups are held on the first and third Monday of the month at 7 p.m. at Brian's Healing Hearts, 461 Main St., Niantic.

    Next month, in-person NAMI family support groups will be Monday, Sept. 4, and Monday, Sept. 18. For more information, visit www.namisoutheastct.org.

    Republicans in Griswold can register Tuesday

    The Griswold registrars have announced that a primary enrollment session will be held from noon to 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 29, for the purpose of registration and/or enrollment of electors entitled to vote in the Sept. 12 town Republican primary.
