The Stonington Garden Club has announced scholarship awards to two Stonington High School seniors who will be pursuing college studies in environmental sciences starting this fall. The $1,000 scholarships were presented to Alayna Wooten and Molly Olson at the SHS Senior Awards night in June.

“The Stonington Garden Club is committed to educating and encouraging interest in conservation and the environment. These scholarship awards were created to recognize and support our high school seniors interested in environmental sciences,” said Laura Metzger, garden club co-president.

“Today’s high school students are faced with a myriad of choices as they begin their college careers. We are proud to offer awards that recognize a focus on the environment and encourage further studies in this critically important field,” said Terri Brennan, chair of the clubs’s Scholarship Committee.

Alayna Wooten, who won the club’s Environmental Awareness Award, intends on furthering her knowledge in environmental sciences to become a herbalist to educate people on the way that all-natural products can help them as they have helped her throughout her life.

Molly Olson, who won the Environmental Studies Award, plans on studying environmental science and policy at Smith College. Her primary interest in environmental sustainability is focused on the food system. She feels there is a disconnect between the food that people buy and consume and where that food has come from.

The garden club’s history with the environmental sciences department at Stonington High School has included providing funds for materials needed for their outdoor gardens. In 2017, determined to encourage local students, the club established a scholarship award for a graduating senior, and now it sponsors an Environmental Studies Award ($1,000) and an Environmental Awareness Award ($1,000).
