    COMO hosting indoor pickleball

    The Stonington Community Center will be offering indoor pickleball starting Dec. 18.

    The sport, rising in popularity, weaves together elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis. And now there are two indoor pickleball courts in the COMO gymnasium, with permanent lines and portable nets.

    Events at the Lyme Public Library

    Local artist Angie Falstrom will be exhibiting her paintings at Lyme Public Library in January. Some of the items are for sale with a portion of the proceeds going to support the library. Ms. Falstrom’s notecards can be purchased at the circulation desk.

    Other highlights of January include the Shell & Bee Studio Art Class Series starting Jan. 2. Join Ms. Chelbi of Shell & Bee Studio at 4 p.m. as she leads a fun and creative afternoon class for elementary school students grades 1-5.

    On Jan. 7 and 21, join Janet Roach at 1 p.m. for “Around the World in Eight Movies.” The award-winning screenwriter will be leading a Sunday afternoon film series featuring memorable international films including “King of Masks” (China, 1995).

    On Jan. 18, the Winter Birding in Southeastern CT — All About Owls will be hosted at 6 p.m., with instructors from the Roger Tory Peterson Estuary Center.

    The Cool-ology Wonder Tots: Animals in Winter program will be held at 11 a.m. Jan. 20. for children ages 3-6, providing hands-on, inquiry-based learning experiences aimed at getting kids really excited about science, engineering, STEAM connections, and the world around them!

    The Lyme Public Library Cookbook Club meets at 1 p.m. Jan. 20. This month’s theme is Soup & Bread.

    Finally, at 6 p.m. Jan. 30 the Mah Jongg Club meets for its monthly gathering. Previous experience playing Mah Jongg is preferred.

    Get trade information at OIC Dec. 18

    Course instructors at OIC of New London County Inc. will be on hand from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at 106 Truman St. in New London for OIC Trade Night, a time to find out what you can expect while taking a ”train to work” course at the training center.

    Course information on Certified Nursing Assistant, Business & Computer Skills, Culinary Arts and Early Childhood Education will be offered.

    Norwich Medieval Feast held Jan. 6

    The Norwich Medieval Feast will celebrate Twelfth Night on Saturday, Jan. 6, from 7 to 10 p.m. at Park Congregational Church, 283 Broadway in Norwich.

    The festive evening will feature an authentic 14th century meal, music, and dance. Tickets are $35, or $60 for two people, and $15 for children ages 3 to 13. Reservations must be made by Jan. 3 by calling 860-887-3747, or emailing parkchurchnorwich@gmail.com.

    Twelfth Night, twelve nights after Christmas, was the great celebration of the Christmas season during the Middle Ages.

    “During the Twelfth Night revelry, people made fun of each other in a good-natured way, and often reversed roles,” said Norwich historian Dale Plummer, who holds a master’s degree in Medieval Studies. The festivities were presided over by a Lord and Lady of Misrule, selected by finding a bean hidden in one of the dishes.

    Guests may dress in period costume if they wish.

    High tea celebration Jan. 13

    The CT Shoreline Club of Soroptimist International is hosting an Afternoon Tea Party fundraiser to kick off the New Year.

    The high tea will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 13 at the Thames Club at 290 State St. in New London. In addition to the tea service, there will be a basket fundraiser, fun and games.

    Proceeds from the fundraiser will support Soroptimist’s “Live Your Dream” and “Dream It, Be It” programs. Tickets are $35 and may be purchased at bit.ly/TeaParty011324. For information, email SoroptimistShoreline@gmail.com.

    Cappella Cantorum registration Jan. 8

    Registration for the spring semester of Cappella Cantorum Masterworks Chorus will take place at 7 p.m. on Jan. 8 at the Deep River Congregational Church (1 Church St., Deep River), with the first rehearsal immediately following at 7:30 p.m.

    This semester’s music will feature “The Peacemakers” by Karl Jenkins, and culminates with a concert in April.

    Auditions are not required. All singers age 13 and up are welcome. Pre-registration and music are now available online at cappellacantorum.org.

    ‘Tackling Big Decisions’ talk Jan. 9

    On Tuesday, Jan. 9, the Women’s Fellowship of Mystic Congregational Church presents “Tackling Big Decisions” featuring a panel of women: Susan Pochal, an attorney who specializes in estate and tax planning plus probate and elder law; Clare Sheridan, a financial adviser; and Ann Bergendahl, a realtor.

    Tea will be offered at 9:15 a.m. and the program starts at 10. The event, at 43 E. Main St., Mystic, is free and open to the public. For information, call 860-536-4259.

    Werewolf at the library Dec. 21

    Who among you is a werewolf? Find out in a program for students in grades 6-12 at the Bill Memorial Library at 6 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 21.
