Community Bulletin Board for Dec. 24, 2023

    Benedict Arnold event Jan. 5

The Norwich Historical Society, in partnership with the Norwich Events Organization and the City of Norwich, has announced a “Lights Out for Benedict Arnold” program on Friday, Jan. 5. The event acknowledges the infamous native son's birthday on Jan. 14, 1741, in Norwich.

The evening will begin at 5:15 p.m. at City Hall and will continue throughout downtown until 9. The ceremony will be held inside City Hall on the second floor and then outside, when the City Hall holiday lights will be turned off.

After the event, many downtown Norwich restaurants and businesses will be open. For information, email info@norwichhistoricalsociety.org, phone (860) 886-1776 or visit www.norwichhistoricalsociety.org.

Arnold’s name is synonymous with the word “traitor.” Despite his defection to the British, he was a fierce patriot for the Continental Army. There are two sides to Benedict Arnold – patriot and traitor – yet often it is difficult to reconcile both aspects of his complex profile.
