On records alone, one would think the Connecticut Sun should beat the last-place Indiana Fever on Sunday at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis (6 p.m., NBCSB).

Uh-uh-uh. Not the way things are going for Connecticut lately.

The Sun (7-5) trudge into the game on a four-game losing streak. They were first overall in the WNBA standings on June 15. They’ve since dropped to fifth.

Connecticut’s latest loss was arguably its worst, 75-70, against the Atlanta Dream on Friday night.

The Sun led 50-37 with four minutes, 59 seconds left in the third quarter.

What followed was 11 minutes and 44 seconds of abysmal basketball. The Sun missed 12 of 14 shots. They turned it over 10 times, twice on offensive fouls. They were called for 15 fouls.

When that awfulness was over, Connecticut trailed 71-56 (a 34-6 Atlanta run) with 3:15 remaining in the game.

Connecticut gave up 24 points on 21 turnovers.

Sun head coach Curt Miller was seething about the free throw discrepancy. The Dream had a 41-23 edge, the second most attempts by a team in a game this season, according to data compiled by National Statistical. The Dallas Wings shot 42 free throws in a 101-78 win over Atlanta on May 20.

Opponents have shot a league-high 24.4 free throws against the Sun.

It hasn’t helped Connecticut that forward Alyssa Thomas (12 ppg) has missed the previous three games to a shoulder injury. She’s second in the league in rebounding (9.9 rpg) and 10th in assists (4.2 apg).

The Sun beat the Fever in their first meeting, 86-77, on May 26.

Indiana (1-12) is rebuilding around a young core. Rookie guard Kelsey Mitchell, the second overall pick in April’s draft, has averaged a team-high 16.2 points

The Fever lost their first 10 games of the season. Their first win — a 96-64 rout of Atlanta — came on June 16.
