Court dates set for defendants in Chew murder case

Court dates have been set for the six teen-agers who are charged with the October 29 stabbing death of Matthew Chew in New London.

Chew, 25, was fatally stabbed as we walked home from his job at a Huntington Street restaurant. Police arrested six local teens Tuesday, alleging they attacked Chew without motive.

The defendants were arraigned Wednesday at the lower level courthouse on Broad Street in New London. Their cases have been transferred to the Huntington Street courthouse, where major crimes are heard.

Idris Elahi and Marquis Singleton, both 17, are charged with murder. Elahi, who is being held in lieu of $1.5 million bond, will appear before Judge Patrick J. Clifford on Dec. 13. Singleton, whose bond is $1.25 million, is scheduled to appear on Dec. 14.

Four others are charged with accessory to murder and are being held in lieu of $500,000 bond. Rashad Perry, 17, who has retained attorney William Gerace for at least his initial appearance, will be presented in court on Dec. 8. Brian Rabell, 18, will appear on Dec. 15. Matias Perry, 17, will appear on Dec. 16. Tyree Bundy's court date is Dec. 17.

At their next court appearances, those who cannot afford an attorney will be appointed a public defender and their attorney will enter a plea on their behalf. Discussion will turn next to whether they will opt for a probable cause hearing. In murder cases, defendants have the right to an evidentiary hearing within 60 days of their arrest. At the probable cause hearing, the state would present information in an effort to convince a judge there is enough evidence to move forward.

Arrest warrant affidavits detailing the case that New London police built against the teens have been sealed for two weeks.
