Second guilty plea in Norwich shooting death

A second man pleaded guilty Thursday morning in New London Superior Court to his role in the 2006 shooting death of Sean Hill in Norwich.

Gregory “Biscuit” Smith, 30, will be sentenced May 30 to six years in prison for second-degree manslaughter.

The alleged shooter, Bruce “Man Man” Gathers, pleaded guilty last month and will be sentenced May 23 to 10½ years in prison for first-degree manslaughter with a firearm.

Hill, 19, was fatally shot near the intersection of Boswell Avenue and Lake Street on June 3, 2006. Soon after the shooting, police charged Gathers and Smith in connection with a robbery that occurred a few moments before the shooting, but were unable to obtain warrants charging them with murder until November 2010.

Gathers went to trial on the murder charge in June 2012, but the jury was deadlocked and unable to reach a verdict. According to the state, Gathers was upset because a friend of Hill’s had been selling crack cocaine on his turf that night.

Hill’s parents, Richard and Virginia Hill, have been following the cases closely and are expected to speak at the sentencing hearings.
