Norwich man charged with convenience store robbery

State police on Friday charged Shaun Cooley of Norwich with the armed robbery of the 7-Eleven at 15 Route 32 on Dec. 17.

Troopers served Cooley, 31, with an arrest warrant in New London Superior Court when he appeared on an unrelated larceny charge. He is serving a two-year sentence for an unrelated burglary.

According to the arrest warrant affidavit, Cooley entered the store at about 6:35 p.m., pulled a mask over his face, displayed a handgun and demanded money. When the clerk ran into the office, Cooley unsuccessfully attempted to open the cash register. He threw the computer monitor to the ground and fled the store.

Cooley’s attorney, Peter E. Scillieri, said there may be additional charges.

State police were conducting a K-9 track from the convenience store when they were called to another armed robbery about a mile away at the Shell Gas Station at 168 Town St. in Norwich.

During the investigation, witnesses told the detectives that Cooley had bragged about the two robberies at a New Year’s Eve party in New London, according to the warrant.
