Pretrial talks underway in tribal embezzlement case

The attorney for former Eastern Pequot chairman Brian Geer began discussing possible resolution of Geer’s embezzlement case this morning with a state’s attorney and judge.

Geer, 47, of 633 Lantern Hill Road, North Stonington, is accused of stealing more than $60,000 from the tribe’s treasury, depleting it, while serving as tribal chairman. He is free on $100,000 bond and has pleaded not guilty in New London Superior Court to a charge of first-degree larceny.

“We had our first pretrial (discussion) in the case this morning,” said his attorney, Peter E. Scillieri, during Geer’s court appearance today. “We are endeavoring to find out what the attitude of the victims is in this case.”

Geer is looking for a job, Scillieri said, because it is likely that at least one component of a resolution will be making restitution to the tribe.

Geer, who allegedly used a credit card to withdraw the money from the tribe’s treasury, told state police detectives he used the funds to support a drug-addicted woman and her daughter.

Senior Assistant State’s Attorney Stephen M. Carney is prosecuting the case and Judge Hillary B. Strackbein is presiding.

Geer’s next court date is Nov. 25.
