Sun advance to Eastern Conference finals

Newark, N.J. — Tina Charles had 25 points and 14 rebounds, and the Connecticut Sun closed with a 14-0 run to beat the New York Liberty 75-62 on Saturday night to advance to the Eastern Conference finals.

Asjha Jones scored 18 points and Kara Lawson had 15 to help the Sun complete the two-game sweep. Lawson had two 3-pointers late in the fourth quarter, including a four-point play that started the final spurt and gave Connecticut the lead for good.

The Sun will next face the winner of the Atlanta-Indiana series, which the Dream lead 1-0 heading into Sunday’s game at home.

Connecticut hadn’t won a playoff series since 2006, when they defeated Washington in the East semifinals to advance.

Cappie Pondexter scored 20 points to lead New York.
