Source: Walker to transfer to Kentucky

According to the Twitter page of Chris Hansen from ESPN Hoopgurlz, former UConn player Samarie Walker has enrolled at the University of Kentucky and “could start classes next week.”

Walker, a freshman forward averaging 6.2 points and 5.8 rebounds per game for the Huskies,  announced Thursday that she was leaving the UConn program. The second-ranked Huskies are 17-1 overall, 6-0 in the Big East Conference.

According to UConn coach Geno Auriemma, Walker came to him in October and told him she was “struggling” with basketball and has been since she was a sophomore in high school. Walker did not make the trip to UConn’s last game at North Carolina.

Should Walker play basketball at Kentucky, she would be required to sit out a year, per NCAA transfer requirements. Walker’s home in West Carrolton, Ohio, is about 300 miles from Kentucky’s campus in Lexington. The Wildcats are ranked 19th in the nation and their roster includes former Norwich Free Academy all-stater Kastine Evans.

    UConn plays tonight against Pittsburgh.
