    Take your sweetie to Sweetie's

Karole's Klassic, made with roasted turkey, cheddar cheese, apple and mayonnaise, at Sweetie's in New London.

For a while, I have wanted to check out Sweetie’s, the somewhat new bakery and breakfast and lunch place on Bank Street.

Unfortunately, at lunchtime I find it difficult to break away from my regular places, which tend to be within a one block radius of The Day’s offices.

But within the last few weeks I’ve started to make the “hike” down Bank Street to Sweetie’s, and I have to say it’s been well worth it.

Sweetie’s make cakes, cookies, cupcakes, brownies and other baked treats, but they also have a creative mix of sandwiches for lunch.

Just to give you a sampling: they have the Roasty Toasty, roast beef, carmelized onion, cheddar cheese and horseradish mayonnaise, the Italian Turkey Club, roasted turkey, fontina cheese, pancetta and pesto, and my personal favorite, Karole’s Klassic, roasted turkey, cheddar cheese, apple and mayonnaise.

At Sweetie’s, they make the sandwiches on the grill right in front of you and pretty much everything is homemade, from the bread to the mayonnaise to the house-roasted meats. “Everything but the cheese,” the guy making my sandwich told me the other day.

The counter and dining area, which is modeled in a 50s throwback kind of style, is also a comfortable and enjoyable setting to eat lunch.

I’ve also gone down there for a mid-afternoon snack and coffee. The Almond Joy Bar is a personal favorite of mine.

So if you’ve not been there, give it a shot for lunch or little snack.
