Pictorial Gazette, a weekly newspaper that served Lyme, Old Lyme, Old Saybrook, Westbrook, Chester, Deep River and Essex, appears to have been shuttered by its parent company Journal Register Co., which owns 22 daily newspapers, including the New Haven Register, and 300 non-dailies.

Journal register also appears to have closed Branford Review, Clinton Recorder, East Haven Advertiser, and some Elm City weekly newspapers. About 15 employees were notified Thursday afternoon that their last day of work was Thursday, said Joyce Mletschnig, who until Thursday was the Gazette's associate editor.

Shore Line Times, which covers Guilford and Madison news, was not eliminated, Mletschnig said.
