    The happiest of hours

Given the state of the world, it’s understandable why someone would consider the idea of “a drink after work” even more resonant than the usual “happy hour” context.

In Groton, there are many places where one can imbibe, and here are just a few of my favorites. Sneekers – which also has excellent food and consistently quality live entertainment – is the perfect fusion of a neighborhood place and a destination for folks from across the region.

Forty Thieves is a fine Irish style pub and whiskey bar from the excellent folks who brought you the late, lamented Hanafin’s in New London. Christopher’s and The Spot are veteran, always-welcoming and much-loved establishments, and don’t overlook the indoor pouring bar and outdoor pavilion at the Outer Light Brewery. Similarly, The Hop Yard has an excellent beer menu and plenty of specials for military personnel.

And longtime residents pledge respective loyalty to regulars’ bars of legend such as Ryan’s Pub, Richoni’s and the Gatehouse Tavern.
