    Kodály, Rachmaninoff and more

ECSO principal tubist Gary Sienkiewicz. (submitted)

If you spend any time in New Orleans, where brass bands proliferate in some magical algorithm, tubas are part of the seductive rhythms and sounds of your day-to-day.

Anywhere else? Maybe not so tuba-y.

Of course, you can always hit New London’s Garde Arts Center Saturday for the latest concert in the Eastern Connecticut Symphony Orchestra’s 2022-23 season. Billed as “Kodály & Rachmaninoff” — and obviously featuring works by those composers — the program also includes Ralph Vaughan Williams’s Concerto in F Minor for Bass Tuba and Orchestra. So, yes, you’ll hear some fine tuba, in this case courtesy of ECSO principal tubist Gary Sienkiewicz.

    Do NOT expect oom-pah!

The evening also promises another excellent soloist. Pianist and Moscow Conservatory grad Vyacheslav Gryaznov will wonderfully explore the textures of Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3. As for Kodály, the evening starts with a recitation of his Dances of Galánta. And rounding out the selections are Mozart’s Symphony No. 32 in G major.

Eastern Connecticut Symphony Orchestra, 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Garde Arts Center, 325 State St., New London; $12-$65; www.ectsymphony.com, (860) 444-7373.
