With a name like Champian ...

    Champian Fulton (submitted)

Without any significant data to support this, I nonetheless have a theory that children succeed in life to the level of the name they have.

Bub Guck, for example, might well be happy at his job as a mulch inspector, and he might perform heroic deeds for his beer league softball team. But Bub Guck ain’t gonna be president of Stanford. Agnes Pookski, similarly, might have a satisfying career at the paste manufacturing factory, but she’s not walking the red carpet at Cannes with co-star Bradley Cooper.

This is why I believe you should see Champian Fulton play Saturday at the Side Door in Old Lyme.

With a name like “Champian Fulton,” she could’ve been an Olympian hurdler. Or solved the neuroscientific enigma behind Parkinson’s disease. Or been a world-class jazz musician.

WAIT! Champian Fulton IS a world-class jazz musician. That’s why this fine pianist/vocalist, touring behind the “Meet Me at Birdland” album, is bringing her trio to the Side Door. The Bub Guck/Agness Pookski Band opens.

Champian Fulton, 8:30 p.m. Saturday, Old Lyme Jazz, 85 Lyme St., Old Lyme; $25-$45; thesidedoorjazz.com.
