    Jazz in Old Lyme

    Larry Fuller (submitted)

It could be argued that, based on harmonic complexity and a tangential reliance on versatile improvisation, jazz is the most creative form of music.

For chrissakes, then: Be creative and come up with ANYTHING for a name other Band Leader Name + Trio (or Quartet or Quintet, whichever’s appropriate)?

Is it a “we’re too cool to be bothered by such things” attitude? And, granted, there are a few non-quintet-y acts such as Weather Report, Mahavishnu Orchestra, the Crusaders, Return to Forever …

This is one reason why it’s so exciting that pianist Larry Fuller is bringing his band Cheap Trick to Old Lyme’s Side Door Jazz Club for shows Friday and Saturday.

Oh … WAIT! I misread the information. The band name is the Larry Fuller Trio.

    Damn!

What the press release says is, “The Larry Fuller Trio is coming to your town, and it’d be a CHEAP TRICK on your readers if you don’t write an advance in your newspaper.”

You should know at least that Larry Fuller, who’s worked with Ray Brown and John Pizzarelli, is a very gifted player and leader, and you can trust that the other two in the trio will be similarly good.

Larry Fuller Trio, 8 p.m. Fri. and Sat., Side Door Jazz Club, 85 Lyme St., Old Lyme; $25-$45; thesidedoorjazz.com.
