    Landing the Starship

David Freiberg of Jefferson Starship (submitted)

Anymore, here’s the first question a lot of fans ask when they see a “classic rock” band is coming to town: “Are there ANY original or significant members still around? Anyone who did ANY of the heavy creative lifting?”

Well, the latest iteration of multi-platinum Jefferson Starship plays Thursday in the Premier Theater at Foxwoods and, why, yes! Multi-instrumentalist David Freiberg co-founded Jefferson Starship from the dying campfire of Jefferson Airplane and is still around. He even co-wrote one of Starship’s biggest hits, “Jane,” and, of equal importance, he DIDN’T co-write “We Built This City.”

Expect rote recitations of Starship/Airplane hits with vocalist Cathy Richardson admirably handling ex-vocalist Grace Slick’s iconic parts. And who the hell’s gonna sing Marty Balin’s magnificent “Miracles”?

Oh, and if you click on the Press Kit link of the band’s official website, you get a memorial page to ex-Airplane/Starship hero Paul Kantner — who died seven years ago. Not sure what we in the working press are supposed to do with it but ...

Jefferson Starship, 8 p.m. Thursday, Premier Theater, Foxwoods; $44.50; foxwoods.com.
