    Musical mayhem

    Unwoke (submitted)

“Battle of the Bands” contests were, for a long time, popular events on a local level. One supposes that “The Voice” or “American Idol” might be thought of as “battle of the bands” programs, but not in the same context as four or five actual groups slogging it out in some nightclub — maybe for a case of beer, two hours free time in a local recording studio and a couple of Shure microphones.

If this sounds like ridicule — it’s not. Struggling bands can USE prizes like that, and it’s a treat for the live audience because each act brings as many fans as possible to help the “audience vote” determinant.

Great fun and often a lot of great music — which is why Mohegan Sun’s annual Locals Live competition is valuable entertainment. It takes place in the Wolf Den, meaning the competitors get to play in a world-class venue with lights and sound, and it has the aura of Big Time.

After weeks of competition, the finals of this year’s Locals Live takes place on Wednesday. The winner gets $5,000 and a headline show in the Den during 2024; runner-up gets $1,000. So far, Montville rock band Unwoke and East Haven R&B singer Kennii have earned their spots in the finals; the third competitor was determined last night after deadline. Show up Wednesday — even if you don’t have a horse in the race — and catch some excellent tunes by worthy folks hopefully on their way to the next level.
