    What’s the Rush?

    Bobby Rush (Kim Welsh)

In 2017, Bobby Rush won his first Grammy award, in the Best Traditional Blues Album category, for his “Porcupine Meat” recording. He was 84 years old. In 2021, his “Rawer Than Raw” earned him a second “Best Traditional Blues Album” Grammy.

This year’s Grammys show is taking place Feb. 4, and Rush is nominated AGAIN for Best Traditional Blues Album. This year’s effort is “All My Love for You.”

    My God! The man’s 90!

And here’s a special opportunity: Rush performs Thursday in Old Saybrook at The Kate, tuning up, we expect, to receive another trophy. You’ll hear samplings from all three of these recordings — as well as treasures from a long and amazing career that goes back to the 1940s when, as teenager, Rush had to paint a mustache on his face to get in the clubs he was headlining.

The Cobalt Rhythm Kings open the show.

Bobby Rush , 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center, 300 Main St., Old Saybrook; $52; thekate.org, (860) 510-0453.
