    Laughter in dire times

    Tom Segura (submitted)

Ours is a world that truly needs laughter right now — which possibly explains why there are so many successful comics crisscrossing the country. In fact, recent employment surveys indicate that one out of every three people is a stand-up comedian.

And while the level of humor/appreciation varies from joker to joker, somehow these folks are all making a living. In less troubled times, when we didn’t desperately need amusement, maybe not all of today’s comics would have self sustaining careers.

    Weird.

In any case, one of the country’s increasingly successful comics, Tom Segura, who once made me laugh hard by describing Atlantic City as “Las Vegas with diarrhea,” is now headlining the truly big halls. His latest Netflix special, “Sledgehammer,” was released last summer and hit the top of the streaming charts, and his “Come Together” tour brings him Saturday to the Mohegan Sun Arena.

Tom Segura, 8 p.m. Saturday, Mohegan Sun Arena; $102 and up; mohegansun.com.
