    One last ‘Elvira’

The Oak Ridge Boys (courtesy oakridgeboys.com)

If you’re even a casual follower of harmony-happy country/gospel heroes the Oak Ridge Boys, you probably know hits like “Elvira,” “Leavin’ Louisiana in the Broad Daylight,” “Trying to Love Two Women,” “Everyday” and “I Guess It Never Hurts to Hurt Sometimes.”

And you probably can identify the band from photos because you’ll say, “Oh, yeah, they’ve got that one mountain-man dude with the long white hair and a beard that looks like he tore it off Gandalf’s chin.”

That particular Oak Ridge Boy, William Lee Golden, the group’s baritone singer, occasionally tours as a solo act. I know this because, in one of the most improbable bookings in music history, my band Safety in Numbers opened for Golden on the Texaco Star Stage at the State Fair of Texas in the late ’80s. I can’t say whether Golden liked Safety in Numbers, but the old fella damned sure liked hanging out backstage with our girlfriends. He was in a fine mood!

Anyway, the Oak Ridge Boys — and the 85-year-old Golden — are on their farewell tour and play Friday in the Great Cedar Showroom at Foxwoods. Sadly, the group’s longtime tenor, Joe Bonsall, suffering from neurological issues, is no longer on the road with the Boys and has been replaced by the extremely capable Ben James.

The Oak Ridge Boys, 8 p.m. Friday, Great Cedar Showroom, Foxwoods; $66-$83; foxwoods.com.
