    Literary ‘Alternatives’

    Caoilinn Hughes (The Clegg Agency)

The esteemed Irish writer Caoilinn Hughes will visit Mystic’s Bank Square Books Wednesday to talk about her latest book, “The Alternatives.” Pre-publication reviews are consistently positive for the story, which details the efforts of three brilliant Irish sisters to find the missing fourth.

At play are professional pressures for each of the women, some of which overlap and all of which might reflect their youths as orphans. This event is a bit of a homecoming for Hughes, who was a 2017 James Merrill House writer-in-residence. Her other books include “Orchid & the Wasp” and “The Wild Laughter.”

Expect a fascinating discussion as Hughes, in one of her Merrill lectures, disclosed, “I have a bit of an unsual writing process in that I have no idea what I’m writing when I start out.”

Caoilinn Hughes, 6 p.m. Wednesday, Bank Square Books, 53 West Main, Mystic; free; banksquarebooks.com.
