    He’s a soul man

    Lee Fields (submitted)

It’s fair to ask, “Does anyone even MAKE soul music anymore?”

It’s fair to answer, “What do you mean ‘soul music anymore’? Of course there’s soul music. It’s just evolved – like everything else.”

If the idea of soul music resonates to you in the context of Sam Cooke, Aretha Franklin, Otis Redding, Al Green, Ray Charles, Irma Thomas, Donny Hathaway, Bill Withers and so on, well, you’re looking for Lee Fields.

Fields has that aching, powerful, emotion-fueled, thistly voice that hearkens back to the Glory Days – and he’ll perform Friday in Westerly at the United Theatre. Listen to his recent “Sentimental Fool” record and realize that, fortunately, this stuff will NEVER die.

Also on the bill are the Monophonics, whose soul/funk tunes are basted with a pleasing psychedelia associated with the P-Funk family.

Lee Fields and the Monophonics, 8 p.m. Friday, United Theatre, 5 Canal St., Westerly; $35; unitedtheatre.org.
