    Classical fusion

    Balourdet Quartet (Kevin W. Condon)

After “Oppenheimer,” millions now know – who didn’t before – the inspirational effects New Mexico’s distinctive and wild geography had on the scientific genius. And look what happened!

Nearly 80 years later, in the New Mexican mountains at the Taos School of Music, a new but similarly powerful bit of fusion took place: the elite chamber music outfit Balourdet Quartet formed.

Experience their sublime fallout Saturday when the Music Matters series continues in Stonington’s La Grua Center. Violinists Justin DeFilippis and Angela Bay, cellist Russell Houston and violist Benjamin Zannoni comprise Balourdet, and they’ll expertly and lovingly nuance Mozart’s String Quartet No. 15 in d minor, K.421 and Beethoven’s String Quartet No. 7 in F Major, Op. 59, No. 1 “Rasumovsky.”

Balourdet Quartet, 5 p.m. Saturday, La Grua Center, 32 Water St., Stonington; Music Matters; $23.18; lagruacenter.org.
