    A pairing of ’80s giants

Daryl Hall and Elvis Costello (courtesty Facebook)

At the height of their respective fame, songwriters Elvis Costello and Daryl Hall occupied very different worlds. The idea that the hyper-intelligent New Waver and the infectiously slick soul-popster would tour together was like bickering golfers Joe Biden and Donald Trump sharing a cart for a quick round at Pebble Beach.

But times indeed change, and the fans of each artist have grown older and more embracing of music they recall from the ’80s. Fact is, Hall and Costello are (still) damned good at what they do — and their separate lists of memorable tunes are substantial and appealing to a mutual audience.

That’s why a Friday double-bill at the Mohegan Sun Arena, featuring Hall along with Costello & the Imposters, is an intriguing idea with plenty of possibilities. Will the E-Man crash Daryl’s stage to pitch in on “Lady Rain”? Or will Daryl skip out to trade verses with Elvis on “Psycho”?

WAIT! What are the odds that “Lady Rain” or “Psycho” will even be played?! They SHOULD be.

Well, who knows. Either way, it’s going to be an evening of enduring music.

Daryl Hall and Elvis Costello & the Imposters, 7 p.m., Mohegan Sun Arena; $56 and up; mohegansun.com.
