I blame Robert Burns. Yes, at some point it occurred to the old Scot to write the poem "Auld Lang Syne" — loose translation: "for days gone by" — which was then put to music by some guitar-toting fiend.

(The chords are F, C7, F, Bb / A, Dm, Gm7, C7, F should it occur to you to literally drive your already-holiday-exhausted friends and family into a murderous rage.)

In any event: Yes, billions of humans will sing the song New Year's Eve, offering yet another reason why you should just stay home.

However, if you MUST go out tonight and celebrate the dawning of 2016, New London's Daddy Jack's is a damned good place to be. The Franklin Brothers Band — which sounds like Steely Dan if Donald Fagen and Walter Becker had studied under the Neville Brothers instead of at Bard College — will be entertaining. And Chef Jack Chaplin promises a midnight buffet with pizza, pasta and some Big Easy surprises.

    The Franklin Brothers, 9 tonight, Daddy Jack's, 181 Bank St., New London; $10 donation after 10:30 p.m.; (860) 444-8888.
