Group hosts Civil War love letter reading
The Shoreline Civil War Roundtable will host a free lecture by Lisa Saunders of Mystic, author of “Ever True: A Union Private and His Wife,” on Tuesday, March 1, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Acton Library in Old Saybrook. Saunders’ book features the love letters between Charles McDowell — who fought in several battles with the 2nd Connecticut Heavy Artillery in the Sixth Corps — and his wife, Nancy. The couple wed when they were 15 years old.
After discussing the research behind the book, Saunders, with the help of readers portraying Charles and Nancy, will read several selected passages.
