Boston standup artists hit Old Saybrook

    Jim McCue (Contributed)

If Chicago is the "Second City" — a presumably tongue-in-cheek self-appraisal in acknowledgment that New York is the Biggest Apple — where does Boston get slotted?

Opinions vary — probably in line with sports team allegiances — but I'm sure there are plenty of Beantown standup comics that would regard their hometown as hugely competitive, punch line-wise.

Need proof? Consider the "Best of Boston Comedy Fest" taking place Friday in the Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center. Headlining will be Jim McCue, noted for his ability to fly off-the-cuff, improvise, and interact with audience members. Also performing are Mitch Stinson, a former Navy pilot who uses his former career for inspiration, and Angel Rentas, a member of the Coors Light National Comedy roster.

Best of Boston Comedy Festival, 8 p.m. Friday, Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Ceter, 300 Main St., Old Saybrook; $25-$30; (860) 510-0473.
