The fact that so many annual events didn’t happen in 2020 has an upside: It makes folks appreciate those festivities all the more this year.

The latest to return is Schemitzun, which takes place this weekend on the Mashantucket Pequot Reservation.

The Feast of Green Corn and Dance celebrates Native American culture, with dance and music competitions leading the way.

At an Eastern Woodland Village exhibit, visitors can see how wampum was made, open-fire cooking was done, and hear stories about ancestors.

People can browse and buy Native American arts and crafts, all made by certified Native American tribal members who are accepted to Schemitzun by invitation only. Items range from beadwork to paintings to silver to T-shirts.

One thing to note: you can’t park on-site at Schemitzun. There are shuttles running from various sites at Foxwoods that bring you to the festival. Those sites are: Fox Tower Hotel Loop, Grand Pequot Tower Hotel Loop, and Great Cedar Hotel Bus Loop. Handicap pickup is available from the Mashantucket Pequot Museum & Research Center. The shuttles stop at these locations every half-hour. All shuttle passengers must wear a mask.
