    Nehantic celebration in Niantic Saturday

    Celebrate the Nehantic Native Nation on Saturday at McCook Park in Niantic.

    The annual Nehantic Heritage Day is organized by the Nehantic Nation and the East Lyme Historical Society.

    Festivities include Humble Spirit drum group performing, and cultural presenter Jennifer Lee demonstrating bark basketry techniques. Among the kid-focused activities, youngsters can do everything from go on a scavenger hunt to learn Nehantic names to make a take-home basket craft.

    The 2 p.m. opening ceremony will be led by tribal council members. Then historian David Naumec will talk about the Pequot War and Mistick Archaeology, and John Pfeiffer will discuss the Nehantic Burial Ground. Members of the Nehantic tribal council will lead a historic walking tour around the park.
