Former world champion Mike Lawrence has authored high-quality books and instructional software for more than 30 years. His interactive CD, "Mike's Advice," helps you develop winning judgment by discussing hundreds of common bidding situations.

Lawrence was today's declarer in a Bermuda Bowl. When West led the queen of spades, East won and returned a spade to the king. Down one looked certain; Lawrence was off two diamonds and a club. But he displayed an expert's knack for giving his opponent a problem: He led a trump to dummy and returned a club.

    BAIT

East swallowed the bait: He rose with the ace and led the jack of spades, hoping to promote a trump trick for his partner. Lawrence ruffed, took his king of clubs, went to the ace of diamonds, discarded a diamond on the queen of clubs and led a trump. Making four!

"Mike's Advice," an excellent stocking stuffer, $33.95 postpaid from 9138 Saddlebow Drive, Brentwood TN 37027. See Mike's website: michaelslawrence.com.

    DAILY QUESTION

    You hold: S A J 8 6 5 2 H Q 2 D Q C A 8 7 4. Your partner opens one heart, you respond one spade and he rebids two hearts. What do you say?

ANSWER: Partner has at least six hearts; he would never be compelled to rebid a five-card suit here. To raise to four hearts would be reasonable. Since slam is possible - partner may hold 4, A K 8 6 5 4 3, K J 10 5, 3 or 4, A K J 10 4 3, K 10 5 2, K 3, you might bid three clubs and support the hearts next as a mild try for slam.
