East Lyme falls to Weston 34-11

East Lyme — Sometimes you just have the flip the page after a game and move on to the next one.

And that’s what the East Lyme football team will look to do after Friday night’s 34-11 loss to Weston of the South-West Conference.

“We exchanged film from the last two weeks,’’ said East Lyme coach Rudy Bagos. “What we saw tonight is what we saw on film. They were just a good, explosive team.’’

East Lyme (1-4) led 3-0 after one quarter on a 28-yard field goal by Kent Place.

The bad news for the Vikings was that Weston’s defense wouldn’t allow much more the rest of the night and Weston’s offense was coming to life.

James Goetz, a strong-armed junior quarterback, led the Trojans (4-1) to touchdowns in three of their next four possessions for a 20-3 halftime lead. And Weston’s defense slowed down East Lyme and had Vikings quarterback Chris Salemme on the run whenever he tried to pass.

“Everything we ran there was somebody there,’’ said Bagos. “It almost looked like they had more than 11 guys. They had a three-man front and we thought we could exploit it. When we weren’t getting those runs right away we went to the air more often. And it’s kind of tough when your quarterback is running around.’’

Goetz gave Weston its first lead when he, after a pump-fake, hit Jack Sawyer over the middle and he ran 50 yards for a score on a third-and-nine play.

“We just had some breakdowns which hurt us,’’ said Bagos. “You’ve got third and long and we get beat deep, which shouldn’t have happened. That’s my fault. I should have had them better prepared on that one.’’

Tyler Bower had an 11-yard touchdown run and Goetz scored from three yards out to make it 20-3. Goetz, who finished with 111 yards rushing and 145 passing, added a 42-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter and a scoring run of eight yards in the fourth quarter to give Weston a 34-3 lead.

East Lyme got in the end zone on its final possesion of the night when Spencer Duthrie caught a 15-yard touchdown pass from Noah Perry and Will Flaherty ran for the conversion.

“This team is explosive but we’re still young at the (offensive) line and we’re getting better,’’ said Bagos.

Blane Hart led East Lyme’s running game with 66 yards on nine carries and Duthrie caught five passes for 73 yards for the Vikings, who host Ledyard next Friday night in an Eastern Connecticut Conference divisional game.

“Now we start to get back into the meat of the ECC,'' said Bagos. "I’ve got to get the kids back focused and excited knowing that we’re going to be facing more ECC teams now.’’
