Waterford High School, which won the CIAC Division II boys' basketball championship in March, will remain in Division II for the 2019-20 season.

The Lancers have won back-to-back state titles, capturing the Division III title during the 2017-18 season and Division II last winter.

The CIAC released updated information for both its boys' and girls' basketball tournaments next season, although girls' officials have yet to release a division-by-division breakdown.

The CIAC girls' basketball committee, however, has elected to adopt a five-division format next season on a trial basis, saying in a release the plan is to use "the same criteria used for the previous year".

The only variation, the release said, will be the number of divisions a "school of choice" is moved up based on the "success in tournament" factor.

The divisions will continue to be enrollment based, although the specific placements won't be released until the fall.

As for the boys, Norwich Free Academy will remain the only local school in Division I, which will have 24 schools next season (up from 20 in 2018-19). Waterford and East Lyme will be in Division II, which has 34 schools, while Division III (36 schools) includes Ledyard, New London, St. Bernard and Stonington, Division IV (38 schools) features Fitch, and Division V (47 schools) has Montville, Old Lyme, Norwich Tech, Grasso Tech and Wheeler.

East Lyme is moving up from Division III, Ledyard and New London are dropping down from Division II, St. Bernard and Stonington are moving up from Division IV, and Fitch is moving down from Division III.

According to the CIAC, the boys' placement system "was created specifically with feedback from our member schools, and is different than the division placement used for any other tournaments which are nearly universally based on enrollment, whereas this formula incorporates success in tournament, league power, enrollment, and other factors using data from the past three seasons.

"The division placement from last season has no bearing on a school's placement this year, the formula simply applies the last three years of data."
