Unbeaten Old Lyme boys thump H-K 75-52

Haddam — Old Lyme boys’ basketball is like any high school team at this time of the season, trying to spackle new players into their rotation.

The Wildcats have a few things going for them, though, namely the return of senior starters Ray Doll, Brady Sheffield and Aedan Using.

    Especially Using.

Using scored 17 of his game-high 27 points in the second quarter and added 13 rebounds to pace unbeaten Old Lyme to a 75-52 win over Haddam-Killingworth in Monday’s Shoreline Conference game at the Patsy Kamercia Field House.

“We’re looking really good,” Using said. “I’m really confident with how we’re playing so far. There’s a lot of things we still have to work on, and the season is still just starting, but as of right now, I’m really happy with how we’re playing.

“I’d say we’re in a similar spot to last year where we were looking no shorter than obviously winning the biggest games.”

The Wildcats (6-0, 5-0) are tied with Montville for the most wins among teams in the CIAC’s Division V. They lost in last year’s final after the best season in program history.

“Were in a decent spot right now,” Wildcats coach Kirk Kaczor said. “These guys are acclimating nicely and they're putting a good start to the season together. Now we get a week off to kind of put in some more offensive and defensive sets, kind of work on some things and try to get better.”

Doll scored 17 points and Sheffield 13 for Old Lyme, which returned four varsity players overall. Senior Jared Ritchie added 11 points and seven rebounds.

“The team chemistry is good,” Kaczor said. “I think we move the ball well. You’ve got to defend everybody on our team because everybody can score, and I think everybody on our team defends.”

Monday was also the first big offensive game from Using, a Division V all-state selection last season who has committed to Division III Brandeis. The 6-foot-6 forward scored 17 of the Wildcats’ 21 second-quarter points to give them a 61-42 halftime lead.

“We’re trying to get Aedan to be more involved in the scoring,” Kaczor said. “He’s leading us in assists. He’s a really good passer. He’s a really good teammate, but he’s also a great scorer. Tonight, he showed that he’s a great scorer. If we can get him to do more of that, it’s certainly going to help us as we move forward.”

Using said, “Coach has been really getting on me to be more aggressive. Tonight, he just really encouraged me to look for my shot more than in past games and I tried to make sure I did that tonight.”
