    North Haven Indians' Winter 2010 Year in Review

    The winter season saw its share of success in North Haven as the boys' basketball team had a landmark campaign by winning the SCC Tournament title with the girls' epée fencing squad taking the state championship. Katie Roberts, a senior captain on that team, additionally triumphed at the Individual State Championship for the epée sword. Meanwhile, the boys' hockey squad earned its first Division I Tournament victory in more than a decade while the boys' track team captured another SCC Oronoque crown.

    Boys' Basketball

    Pete Civitello's squad won 16 games for the regular season and then captured the first SCC Tournament title in program history by defeating Hillhouse 41-34. The campaign ended with a 58-53 loss to Wilby-Waterbury in the first round of the Class L State Tournament to finish at 19-5.

    Senior captain point guard Brian Salzillo received MVP as he averaged 20.8 points a game and led the area in three-pointers. Salzillo was additionally named All-Oronoque, to the New Haven Tap Off Club's All-County Team, and was an All-Area pick. Salzillo captained the Indians with fellow seniors David Sims, a power forward/center, and small forward Joe Setaro, who averaged 13 points a game and won the Sportsmanship Award.

    Girls' Basketball

    North Haven won three games in Tom Cappello's second season as head coach, the most exciting a 37-35 triumph versus Shelton in which junior Sarah Black hit the go-ahead basket with 11 seconds remaining. Forward Abby Esposito was North Haven's senior captain.

    Boys' Ice Hockey

    The Indians won nine games during the regular season and played their best down the stretch, claiming victory in five of their final eight contests to build momentum entering the Division I Tournament. In the first round, North Haven earned its first win in the DI bracket in 15 years as Tyler Benson scored from fellow junior Rich Mauri to lift the Indians to a 3-2 overtime win versus Glastonbury. Mike Violano's club then dropped a 4-0 decision to New Canaan to finish at 10-11-1.

    North Haven's senior captains were forwards Anthony Fasulo and Anthony Cuomo and the junior assistant captain was Rich Mauri, also a forward, who led the team with 12 assists. Fasulo scored 15 goals with seven assists to earn MVP with Cuomo notching 13 goals and 11 assists to earn Second Team All-SCC.

    Girls' Ice Hockey

    North Haven went 6-6-2 with coaches Ed Pierpoint and Mike Hribko, which included a key late-season 2-1 victory versus a Simsbury team who the Indians had lost to earlier in the campaign.

    The senior captains were North Haven resident Allie Doheny and Amity's Stephanie Ryan, who were forwards.

    Girls' Fencing

    The epée squad went 8-2 for the regular season and then beat Hopkins-New Haven 5-2 to win the state championship. Meanwhile, Pete Solomon's foil team went 7-4 and then downed Norwich Free Academy 5-3 to place third at states.

    Senior captain Katie Roberts was named North Haven's MVP as she fenced foil and epée and lost just two bouts for the latter sword, defeating a Hopkins fencer 16-9 to prevail at the Individual State Championship. Roberts captained the Indians with fellow senior Siyuan Fu, who fenced foil and won the bout that clinched third for that team at states.

    Boys' Fencing

    North Haven's boys' epée and foil teams went 5-6 for the regular season and the foil squad then pulled out a 5-4 win versus Hopkins at the State Championship to place third.

    Senior captain Adam Lee, who fenced foil, won MVP. He captained North Haven with Jason Riggs, who won the bout that sealed third place for the epée team at states. Riggs received the Sportsmanship Award.

    Boys' Indoor Track

    North Haven's MVP was senior captain Matt Kortsep, an All-Oronoque selection who won the 600 to help the Indians take first place at that meet for the second-straight season. Kortsep also ran on two relays which prevailed at the Oronoque meet, one of which-the 4x400-went onto to prevail at states. He captained North Haven with Casey Mackay, Dominic Izzo, and Justin Hoffman.

    Most Improved was junior Colby Jennings, who ran on the 4x400 relay that prevailed at the Oronoque meet and states, as well as the school record 4x800 relay (8:36.26) with Mackay, Stephen LaLuna, and Patrick Hubbell.

    Senior Anthony Chiaia won the shot put at the Oronoque and Class L meets. Also making All-Oronoque was the triumphant 1,600 sprint medley relay that featured Kortsep, Bucknall, Jalon White, and Harris. Hubbell also made All-Oronoque by taking first in the long jump at that meet with Harris winning the 1,000.

    Girls' Indoor Track

    Junior Amanda Rizzo had her season cut short due to injury, but not before breaking the Indians' record in the 55 (7.67 seconds) and taking second in that event and the long jump at the Oronoque meet to earn MVP. Most Improved was junior Martina Benassi, who won the pole vault at the Oronoque and SCC Championships.

    Sprinter Sarah McGovern received the Sportsmanship Award. She captained the Indians with Kristen Russo, Amy Pandolfi, and Lindsay Meyer. Junior Katherine Lewis made All-Oronoque by winning the shot put at that meet.

    Cheerleading

    The young Indians placed third at the SCC Championship and then, despite losing All-SCC and All-State athlete Tara Jermine to injury, took a sixth-place finish at the Class L meet. Jermine, a junior, was MVP.

    Kathleen Crisafi's Indians were captained by seniors Christina Volpe and Stephanie SanGiovanni, the latter who earned the Sportsmanship Award.

    Rifle

    The Indians finished at 7-2 in Brent Heidenis's first campaign as head coach, shooting a season-best score of 916 out of 1,000. Senior captain Matt Buechele recorded the fourth-highest scoring average in the state.

    Boys' Swimming

    Matt Johnson's squad capped its season by finishing eighth at the SCC Championship. Senior captain John King came in seventh in the 200 individual medley at the SCC meet, followed by a sixth-place finish at the Class LL State Championship.
