Stonington field hockey, Waterford girls' soccer advance to state finals
A pair of Eastern Connecticut Conference schools earned the right to play for state championships on Saturday while a third just came up short.
Stonington High School, the Class S runnerup in field hockey a year ago, earned a return trip to the state championship game with a convincing 4-0 victory over Thomaston on Tuesday night.
The Bears will face the winner of Wednesday's semifinal match between Granby Memorial and Northwest Catholic on Saturday at Wethersfield at a time to be determined.
In girls' soccer, Waterford earned a trip to the Class M finals with a 2-1 win over Tolland. The Lancers will face Haddam-Killingworth, a 1-0 winner over Weston, on Saturday at a site and time to be determined.
St. Bernard was less fortunate. The Saints were eliminated in the Class S semifinals by Old Saybrook. After battling through a scoreless regulation and two overtime periods, the Rams beat the Saints in the penalty kick round, 3-0. to advance to Saturday's final against Portland at a site and time to be determined.
