East Lyme — Susan Welshock was uncertain how her East Lyme boys’ tennis team would fare this season playing in the new Eastern Connecticut Conference Large Division, featuring the league’s best teams, with a lower turnout than usual.

Turns out that this season has gone as smoothly as any that the Vikings and Welshock have had in their 10 years together.

East Lyme swept its three doubles matches to beat rival Waterford on Thursday, 4-3, to both clinch the Large Division title and remain unbeaten with one match left in the regular season.

“I was not sure how we’d do since they’re all very good teams (in the ECC Large) with powerhouses,” said Welshock, who co-coaches the team with Mike Abate. “Stonington, Waterford and Fitch, we’ve known them for years and they always have depth and lots of players, so, no, I had no idea how we’d do.

“This is a smaller team than we’ve had in the past. In all my years of coaching, this was the smallest team, so I was a little nervous not having 30-something kids to choose from, but that almost made it an asset in the sense of doing ladder matches and pairings and really being able to focus on individual players and spend time with them more closely. I think that all helped. We were able to put (doubles) teams together right away from the first two weeks of spring practice."

Mukesh Kurumbail and Davon Chen beat Evan Burdsall and Dylan Vitale at No. 1 doubles, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) for East Lyme (13-0, 12-0). Charlie Lyden and Conard French and Mark Powers and Eric Gu also won their doubles matches. All three teams are unbeaten.

Matei Coiculescu won at No. 3 singles for the Vikings, who plays host to Bacon Academy on Friday.

Camiren Carter beat Eric Wu 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 to win No. 1 singles for the Lancers (12-3, 9-2). Michael Gianakos and Adam Pinch also won for Waterford.

    In other matches:
