Stop anonymous attacks, provide fairer coverage

I express admiration for the students at New London High who, led by young women of color, walked out of a school assembly as part of the National Walk Out Day on March 14.

My family stood in the parking lot with signs our children made that read: “Safe Schools Equal Justice and Equality” and “No Guns” and cheered and chanted along with hundreds of students. We came as white, adult allies to support the youth walking out.

I wish The Day’s reporters heard what we did. Your coverage seemed more interested in disparaging Hearing Youth Voices than listening to young people.

Here is what I heard: The youth were exuberant, outraged and full of their peaceful power. They articulated real solutions: more resources, more teachers of color, restorative justice oriented conflict-resolution and other positive solutions. A friend of mine, a sophomore walked out. Her sign read, “I want my voice to be heard…. I want to be safe at school.”

I wish The Day’s reporters had heard her.

I would also add, The Day should adopt a new policy banning anonymous comments. The responses to your Walk Out coverage were distinctly awful and hateful and did nothing but spread fear amongst an already anxious student population.
