Another danger of forgoing measles vaccine
The Day editorial “Perhaps we forget how bad measles can be,” (April 18), didn’t mention a serious side effect that had particular meaning for Connecticut and southeastern Connecticut: deafness. In the days before the MMR vaccine, many children with measles were often left profoundly deaf, so many that different treatments were developed: the oral method at the Mystic Oral School and sign language at the American School for the Deaf in Hartford.
As we know, the Mystic Oral School closed some years ago now. With the development and use of the MMR vaccine, it was thankfully no longer needed.
It would be truly tragic for children now to become deaf from measles because they were not vaccinated.
