Short-time rentals help Noankers keep their homes

Noank zoning is close to proposing short-term rental restrictions. Rentals are part of the fabric of Noank. Visitors support our economy. Many Noankers come as renters, then purchase homes, which supports our real estate market. Commissioners are targeting STRs for noise and parking problems. Some disparage secondary home ownership, suggesting limiting STRs will encourage full-year residency.

Despite repeated requests, they failed to document these perceived problems or the economic consequence of limiting STRs. Most hosts rent to meet ever-growing property taxes. Residents may have to sell generational homes without rental income. Loss of these folks would change the fabric of Noank. No evidence suggests buyers would be full-time residents.

Most renters in Noank are families. They appreciate in reviews our homes, village, restaurants, friendly neighbors, and host attentiveness. Rather than restricting responsible rentals, penalties should apply to those few who allow disruptive behavior. Noise and parking rules should apply to all, residents and visitors. Regulation needs balanced dialogue between commission and hosts, otherwise “neighbor will be pitted against neighbor.”
